about

Probably the first song I ever wrote (1963!): I added a last verse based upon today's view...

There’s an old pine tree that’s stood for many years
Nobody knows just how long it’s stood
But if that tree could talk, I know it’d surely tell
All the stories that are stored up in that wood

Story of the natives who lived and loved this land
Worked with animals, plants and trees
And tho’ they tried their best, when settlers came out west
They saw it disappear fast as you please

Story of a miner who worked for many years
Tryin’ to find his fortune in the dirt
His daughters and his wife, who couldn’t take this life
Found their way back East, but still it hurt
He’s old and at it still: give up? he never will
Like a man obsessed, he struggles on
His dreams are tarnished now, he keeps on anyhow
In this game he’s just a lowly pawn

Story of a cowboy riding in the west
Who couldn’t take the city life no more
He left the city lights, foolish barroom fights
His mind is numb, his butt is saddle sore
He used to dream of Molly, who filled him with desire
He gave her flowers, tried to give his heart
She turned his love away, it hurts him still today
His cowboy life still suffers from that part.

The story of a world, from Big Bang it was hurled
And now it’s sad to see it dyin’ away
But if we change our ways, we might get extra days
To see this suffering’ planet turn around
Let’s do our bit right now, attempt it anyhow
Working together we might gain some ground
For the children still to come, to dance and play and run
Let’s say a prayer and hope God hears the sound

There’s an old pine tree that’s stood for many years
Nobody knows just how long it’s stood
But if that tree could talk, I know it’d surely tell
All the stories that are stored up in that wood
(And I’ll bet you… that the stories… would be good…)
